What Is Saturating You?
Throughout my life I have always looked forward to visits to my grandfather. I enjoyed hearing his wild tales of farm life during the Great Depression. The Lord got a hold of my grandfather’s life in his early 20s, when his faith went from being cultural to actually personal and His Lord Jesus held him fast through all the ups and downs for the next 70ish years till He called my grandpa home last October.
The last time I saw my grandpa out of the house was at his younger brother’s funeral. At this point the dementia had set into my grandpa’s mind. While at the funeral, he kept thinking that it was his dad laying there in the casket not his brother. But I will never forget that during worship we were singing “Holy, Holy, Holy” and I was standing next to my grandpa and he was singing the base part loud and clear. I actually ended up following his singing.
This got me to thinking, what will be coming out of my mouth when my mind has gone? Will it be the praises of God? What am I saturating my brain with now? There are plenty God glorifying ways to enjoy the many good “everyday” gifts God gives us down here on earth, but there are plenty of things that are not good. Are the books we are reading, the screens we are watching, the music we are listening to, and the tasks we are pouring our time into orienting our lives toward God or away?
In Luke 6:45, our Lord tells us,
“out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks”
Therefore, I exhort you, Saturate your heart in his praise now. Let it continually take root so that even when everything else falls away, Christ is what remains on your lips. This reminds us of our need to confess.
Prayer of Confession
Lord we confess that we do not saturate our minds with the things that we ought to. We are often carried away by frivolous things that orient our hearts away from you. Our busyness and apathy misplace our focus. For all this we are in deep need of your mercy. Teach us to number our days and, by your Spirit, lead us in a time of silent confession…
