Turn My Eyes
In Psalm 119, verse 37, the Psalmist prays:
“turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.”
Before the internet and smartphones and social media… the Psalmist prays that God would turn his eyes from looking at worthless things.
What are your eyes looking at? Is it pornography? You don’t have to be enslaved to that sin. Know that Jesus came to set you free from that. Confess this sin to God, rest in His forgiveness. Confess this sin to a trusted friend, and bring it into the light.
Perhaps your eyes get stuck on the never-ending doom scroll of trivial and irrelevant things on social media. Things that might not be explicitly sinful, but things that … when added up … waste your time and consume your life. Know that Jesus can set you free from that!
Perhaps it’s something else. We live in an age of endless distractions and temptations for our eyes. What are you looking at that is keeping you from seeing and savoring the glory of Christ?
Cities Church, I exhort you this morning: Turn your eyes from looking at worthless things.
And this reminds us of our need to confess our sins…
Prayer of Confession
Most merciful God, we confess that our hearts, and our minds, and our eyes are often fixed on worthless things. You are the Infinitely Worthy One, but we tend to linger on the worthless, sinful, distracting, and irrelevant things of this world.
Lord Jesus, we know that you came into the world to save sinners. And you invite us to bring our sin into the light, not that we would be condemned but so that you would heal us… So Lord we ask you to heal us now, as we bring our sin before you in this time of silent confession…
