Something to Remember
It sometimes amazes me how I can manage to remember some of the most random and inconsequential of things, but forget some of the most central and important. Yes, I remembered to buy extra paper clips at the store. No, I cannot remember where I parked my car.
You would think it’d be our most essential tasks and facts that we’d be least prone to neglect. Often, it’s quite the opposite — with what’s most essential taking a back seat to what’s most observable or immediate.
We wake up remembering to pack our lunch, tie our shoes, and pick up a gallon of milk on the way home from work. But we don’t remember God. Don’t remember that we are his. Don’t remember that Jesus has already taken care of our greatest problem. Don’t remember that, in Him, we already have all that we could ever want and need and more. Brothers and sisters, remember you have a Savior. Remember you have salvation. Remember and regularly rehearse these truths which are most central and most important in our lives.
Prayer of Confession
Father, forgive us for forgetting. For forgetting to daily take hold of the immeasurably wonderful reality of Jesus. For forgetting to turn our eyes to Him — all that he is, all that he has done. Forgive us for instead idolizing and obsessing over things in this world which pale in comparison to you. Forgive us for seeking and laboring for life in empty wells rather than in you. And Father, for those many other ways in which we’ve sinned against you this week, we bring them to you now in this moment of silent confession…
