Don't Be Impressed With People

Before we go into our time of confession I want us to think about how easily we can be impressed with what the world has to offer us? And then on top of that why do we feel the urge to be so impressive in people’s eyes? God is not like that. The things that so easily impress us, don’t impress God. In 2 Chronicles it talks about how “The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth looking for a heart that is fully committed to him.” God isn’t fooled by our actions or by our good deeds or by any religious exterior that we put up. He really does see our hearts and motives and he’s looking for a heart that is seeking after him.

We can be so impressed with external stuff that sometimes we can think that being blessed means how much nice stuff we have or how successful we are, or we can think we’re blessed because nothing awful is happening to us and everything is going well.

But that’s not how God thinks. Listen to Jesus in Matthew chapter 5. He says:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek; for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God...”

Let’s stop being so impressed with others and lets be amazed with who God is. And let us not boast in ourselves and our accomplishments but let’s boast in Jesus and what he accomplished on the cross.
